Ever wondered where the people at Nike get their ideas? Well this post is a virtual tour of the Nike Canteen in Hilversum, the Netherlands, where some of the people working for the multinational company recharge their batteries. The project was planned by Amsterdam studio UXUS and showcases a very creative and unconventional design.
According to UXUS, the objective stated in the brief was “to create a personalized, social hub inspired by sports that encouraged and enabled the exchange of ideas“. The approach was a playful and sportish one. The designers closely monitored the various needs and wishes of the Nike crew working in the premises and built the canteen accordingly.
The place is a mix of spaces offering solitude and large tables for stimulating conversations. Most of the tables and panels are painted with logos and statistics. On the wall opposite to the entrance, there is a large portrait of Bill Bowerman and the famous quote saying “If you have a body, you are an athlete“. “The favorite meals of sport stars – including Maria Sharapova and Paula Radcliffe- are listed on one of the wooden panels. Large windows allow light in and cheer up the atmosphere. Colorful chairs and picnic benches add personality and create an informal space, perfect for interaction.
