STUTTGART, Germany — Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new G-Wagen LAPV 6.X, in collaboration with defense contractor EADS. Based on the sturdy G-Class, the Light Armored Patrol Vehicle is aimed at the global defense industry.
Compared with the earlier Mercedes LAPV 5.4, the new LAPV 6.X concept has a greater payload capacity, enhanced protection and more agility.
The concept is powered by a high-torque common-rail diesel engine that enables speeds of up to 93 mph, with a payload capacity of 1.4 tons.
The full steel body provides ballistic protection, while the modular armor plate system includes a mine deflector built into the floor.
The LAPV 6.X also features variable-lift coil-over air shocks front and rear, providing up to 17.7 inches of ground clearance, as well as an individual tire-inflation system.
The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) supplied a vehicle data recorder, UHF/VHF integrated communication system, integrated mobile command/control and jamming system.
