Marchesa will be donating the iconic blue gown worn in Crazy Rich Asians to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
The dress will be presented at “The Party,” an event hosted by the Smithsonian’s Asian Pacific American Center in Los Angeles on May 18 celebrating Asian Pacific Americans’ contributions to history and culture.
Crazy Rich Asians was produced by Warner Bros, and grossed $238 million worldwide. Noted for having a mostly East Asian cast, the first Hollywood film to do so since The Joy Luck Club in 1993.
The dress appeared in the film at an important moment when the main character attends a high-profile wedding in defiance of her boyfriend’s mother Eleanor, played by Michelle Yeoh, who disapproves of their relationship.
The airy, floor-length gown is made of blue tulle with floral applique and a cinched waist. The Grecian-style piece has a deep V-neck and long sleeves that was originally designed by Marchesa for its Fall 2016 collection. Marchesa loaned the gown to the film’s production, during which the sleeves were removed for aesthetic purposes. The museum will be receiving this altered sleeveless version.
