More to come as Lee DeWyze wins American Idol and Simon retires from the show. The new “American Idol” is Lee DeWyze, a paint store clerk who overcame his shyness and prevailed over soulful Crystal Bowersox in the singing contest’s ninth season.
DeWyze, 24, won the coveted title and a recording contract after millions of Americans cast their votes for the bluesy guitarist despite what “Idol” judges had deemed a better showing by Bowersox in Tuesday’s performance finale.
Although Bowersox drew higher marks from the judges for her performance this week, the panel had reaffirmed its respect for DeWyze’s talent and his character — and the audience agreed. He’ll release a single, “Beautiful Day.”
“I have never been happier in my life,” said an emotional DeWyze, who worked in a Chicago paint shop before auditioning for the Fox TV singing contest a year ago.
Not only was a winner chosen but it was also Simon Cowell’s last episode of filming another AI competition. Previous judge Paula Abdul made a guest appearance along with a few contestants from past seasons.
