If 2014 was the year of the high performance, luxury coupe, thanks to Bentley, Rolls-Royce and now Lamborghini, 2015 is shaping up to be the year of the luxury SUV.
Lamborghini has finally confirmed what everyone knew all along, that VW would require the volume and profit from the brand only an SUV can bring. So they’re investing hundreds of millions of Euros in their factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese creating a substantial increase in the production capacity of the factory to produce the much anticipated Urus SUV.
Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said: “This is a proud moment for everybody in Lamborghini. The introduction of a third model line endorses the stable and sustainable growth of the company and signifies for us the beginning of a new era. The new SUV will be made in Sant’Agata Bolognese, demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding the values of ‘Made in Italy’ worldwide.”
Based on the Urus Concept introduced in Beijing back in 2012, we expect the new four-door, four-seat to cost well over $200,000 and battle the Bentley Bentayga for performance supremacy in the VW/Audi/Porsche family. If all goes as planned, the new Lambo SUV will go on sale in 2018. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
