22 years ago an injured Kirk Gibson, his team trailing in the first game of the World Series, hobbled out of the Los Angeles Dodgers dugout in the bottom of the ninth inning. Gibson would go on to hit a game-winning home run off of Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley – in one of of baseball’s most electrifying moments. The underdog Dodgers would go on to defeat the Oakland A’s and win the baseball title.
Now Gibson will put the bat used to hit the historic home run up for auction.
In mid-November the auction will be held by SCP Auctions. The auction will include Gibson’s bat as well as batting helmet, home and road uniforms, World Series trophy and Most Valuable Player award. Proceeds from the sale of the World Series trophy and MVP award will benefit the Kirk Gibson Foundation, which supports athletics at Michigan State, and help fund partial scholarships at the two high schools where Gibson’s parents taught.
No word on the expected sale price of these baseball treasures.
Gibson is currently the manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
