The Pursuitist Recommended: Isabelle’s Curly Cakes available exclusively at The Plaza Food Hall by Todd English. Quite possibly the best cupcakes in NYC are just down the hall from Eloise. Within The Plaza Hotel is the amazing The Plaza Food Hall by Todd English. English is a four-time James Beard Award winner and inductee into the James Beard Foundation’s “Who’s Who in Food and Beverage in America.”
Curly Cakes is a joint project between Todd English and his 16-year-old daughter Isabelle. Izzy spent last summer apprenticing for her dad, attending meetings with contractors and realtors, and giving feedback on the menu. The cupcakes are amazing: red velvet, lemon with pomegranate vanilla frosting, and toasted coconut.
“We thought it would be good for her college application, good for her self-esteem. She really has done everything: the layout of the shop, logos, the name—CurlyCakes, because we always kid her about her curly hair. We’re thinking about savory cupcakes for winter, like a corn cupcake, and you cut it open and put chili and avocado, with a sour-cream frosting,” Todd English told NYMag
Plaza Hotel, 1 West 59th St., 212-986-9260. Sunday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
