The InterContinental New York Times Square will be located at 44th Street and 8th Avenue, in the heart of the Broadway District and within walking distance to 40 theaters. The New York fashion, financial and commercial districts are nearby as well as spectacular sights, city landmarks and incredible shopping. The hotel is conveniently located near all of New York City’s airports and within blocks of Penn Station and Grand Central stations. A Subway station is accessible below the hotel. Designed by the global architecture firm Gensler, The InterContinental New York Times Square rises 34 stories above the dynamic Eighth Avenue development corridor. It joins contemporary icons the Hearst Tower by Norman Foster and Renzo Piano’s New York Times Building on the skyline. Gensler’s holistic design draws from two distinctly New York neighborhoods. White glass along Eighth Avenue reflects the movement and shimmer of the street, while warm-toned granite on the 44th Street façade relates to the adjacent residential buildings. Featuring a restaurant and street-level retail, the six-story podium is topped by a sculptural glass hotel tower. The hotel is to open in Summer 2010.

The new New York City hotel features a total of 607 guestrooms including 29 corner suites, each averaging 350 square feet, with oversized bathrooms complete with walk-in rain showers. Additionally, the hotel’s 2,700-square foot duplex Presidential Suite will showcase dramatic panoramic views. As one of the closest hotels to Javits Convention Center, the property also features 10 meeting rooms totaling 10,000 square feet inclusive of a 4,000-square foot ballroom.

“Opening the largest new-build hotel in the New York City market since 2002 — especially in this economy — is a tremendous milestone and the result of working with the right owners to put the right hotel brand in the right location,” said Jim Abrahamson, president, The Americas, IHG. “By leveraging the global strength of the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand and the scale of IHG, the InterContinental New York Times Square will be in a prime position this summer to attract both international and domestic business, conference and leisure travelers.”

The hotel will showcase a new French inspired brasserie, Ça Va from Celebrity Chef Todd English who was recently named to James Beard Foundation’s “Who’s Who in Food and Beverage in America.” The restaurant includes an intimate dining space available for private events and a dynamic bar area overlooking Broadway capturing the energy of the New York Theatre District and the urban appeal of historic Hell’s Kitchen.

With interior design by Jeffrey Beers International (JBI), the InterContinental New York Times Square is being developed, and is owned by, a partnership led by affiliates of Tishman Hotel & Realty LP, under a license agreement with a company in the InterContinental Hotels Group.

InterContinental Hotels Group PLC is planning to nearly double its stable of hotels in New York City in the coming years, starting with the luxury, 600-room lodging slated to open July 12 in the Times Square area. IHG’s new InterContinental New York Times Square was built and is owned by a partnership led by Tishman Hotel & Realty LP. It will compete with the nearby Westin and W hotels. The InterContinental will cater primarily to business travelers, with nightly rates between $350 and $550. The four-bedroom penthouse will cost $15,000 per night. Designed by Jeffrey Beers International, the hotel features an outdoor garden in its lobby. Its rooms include amenities such as oversized showers and a monitor and keyboard connected to a computer network for guests’ use. Chef Todd English will operate a 130-seat French restaurant on the hotel’s ground floor. The hotel’s estimated development cost is nearly $500 million. – from WSJ
