Hotel Review: Park Lane Hotel New York

Park Lane Hotel New York, a Preferred Hotels & Resorts member, is in the heart of Manhattan and enjoys a premium spot right at the edge of Central Park. What you will enjoy here is a prime location, friendly service and some of the most comfortable (and sizable) rooms on this side of the park. Here are our five favorite features of the Park Lane Hotel New York.

The location

It goes without saying that this is one of the best addresses of a hotel. Its neighbors include famous names like The Plaza to one side and the Ritz-Carlton on the other. Facing the hotel is the enormous Central Park, and the best rooms in the house have unending views of this beautiful green space.

Once you enter the swirling doors, you’re greeted with Art Deco elegance in the small lobby. Reception is to your right, and the concierge team is to your left. Both can point the way to the area’s best restaurants and shops, and Fifth Avenue is just around the corner calling out for your credit card.

It is easy to walk to Broadway theaters, top restaurants, anywhere in the park or subway stations in every direction.

The rooms

These rooms are not typical of Manhattan and are much larger than your average hotel. They continue the Art Deco theme and have subtle color tones and garden-themed art that reminds you of Central Park just outside. From the moment you walk in your room, you are greeted with the sound of chirping birds from the TV, and the artwork showcases the types of trees and flowers you might find in the park.

The beds have enormous pillows and a soft duvet, but most impressive are the bevy of power and all types of USB outlets on either side. Large flat-screen TVs sit atop the credenza where storage space, a refrigerator and coffee maker are all available. Two sturdy metal water bottles are complimentary and can be refilled and stations around the hotel.

Bathrooms have glass shower stalls with clever cutouts so that you can switch on the water and adjust the temperature without getting drenched or scalded. Wide vanities have citrus-scented Jo Loves toiletries and stacks of wide towels.

The dining

On the lobby level, the coffee shop and bar stays busy from morning to night with all kinds of healthy and guilty pleasures. While there is no complimentary coffee or tea in the lobby in the morning, there are plenty of coffee shops nearby. Rose Lane serves three meals a day from a modern menu of local and international dishes like its famous Napolitano pizzas. There’s also the always-popular Veuve Clicquot terrace where Champagne (and a whole menu of tasty and sippy treats) is on offer during the warmer months.

But, what most people know this hotel for is its rooftop bar and restaurant where the entire city (and park) unfurls in front of your eyes. Reservations are a must if you don’t want to wait, and this is a highlight for tourists and locals that want to take in the views.

If you prefer to stay in the room for a bite to eat, room service is always available. Most impressive is the caviar hotline that you can dial up to have a tin of luxury delivered to you at any hour.

The amenities

A full-service fitness center on the fifth floor features the latest equipment like Peloton bikes although a morning jog in the park is always a treat. The Lululemon workout mirror in the gym is also very popular.

There is a $49 nightly amenity fee that covers things like the refillable metal water bottles you can take home, luggage storage at the property after checkout until 11pm and access to PressReader for thousands of global newspapers and magazines.

The staff

While the reception area is not large, you won’t have any trouble finding a staff person to help you. Fitting for a luxury hotel, the team is well-versed in managing the mix of tourists and business travelers that like to stay here.

But, what impressed me most is how the staff seems to really enjoy their jobs. For example, I saw the doorman greeting some passersby that he clearly sees each day and has gotten to know. On another occasion, I witnessed another doorman vacuuming the welcome mat out front. It’s this type of pride in their work and genuine care that is the true mark of hospitality.
