Inspired by the 1985 film Back to the Future and main character Marty McFly’s self-lacing sneakers from the world in 2015, Nike is releasing a line of space-age looking athletic shoes, the Nike MAGs.
A limited edition of these futuristic shoes will be auctioned on eBay to support the Michael J. Fox Foundation to benefit Parkinson’s disease, which the former star of the film suffers from.
Nike applied for a patent for the Back to the Future sneakers in August 2010. Famed Nike designer Tinker Hatfield and footwear innovator Tiffany Beers have returned to recreate the footwear legend. Based on an original movie prop used in Back to the Future Part II, the 2011 Nike MAG shoes have been entirely rebuilt and perfected. Though the self-lacing feature will not actually be featured on the 1,500 limited edition high-tops, the soles light up for four hours without a charge.
Beginning September 8 through 18, the Nike eBay page will accept bids for the shoes at http://nikemag.ebay.com. Bids range from US$3,900 to US$5,300.
