“Portrait of George Dyer Talking” by Francis Bacon sold for $70.3 million at auction in London. The price is the most ever for a single-panel painting by Bacon (a three panel painting, “Three Studies of Lucian Freud”, sold for $142 million last year).
The 6-foot-tall 1966 canvas was a tribute to George Dyer, Bacon’s love and muse. Dyer would dominate Bacon’s most influential period – the 1960s – before Dyer’s death by suicide in 1971.
Bacon died in 1992. His reputation continues to grow – as do the the price of his works.
