If you’ve always wanted the DeLorean made famous in the “Back to the Future” films, now is your chance. The DeLorean Motor Company of Humble, Texas, will produce 300 replicas of the classic 1982 DeLorean.
DeLorean Motors was founded in 1975 by John Delorean (vehicle production wouldn’t begin until 1981). The company made one car – the DeLorean DMC-12. The DeLorean was famed for its gull-winged doors and stainless steel body. DeLorean went bankrupt in 1982, bringing production to a halt, but not before about 9,000 vehicles were made.
The car would have likely have faded into obscurity if not for the crucial role it plays in the “Back to the Future” films, starring Michael J. Fox. The DeLorean is made into a time travel device by Doc Brown (played by Christopher Lloyd).
The DeLorean Motor Company was resurrected in 1995 by Stephen Wynne, specializing in refurbishing existing DeLoreans for enthusiasts.
The decision to build the DeLorean replicas came after the 2015 Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act of 2015 allowed companies to build replica vehicles without having to satisfy modern safety regulations. The catch is no more than 325 vehicles can be made each year.
Wynne wants to begin production of the DeLorean DMC-12 replicas shortly, with vehicles available for purchase in 2017. The cost will be about $100,000. Unfortunately, there will be no Flux capacitor in the replicas.
