In move that could eventually threaten Netflix, Facebook announced it will test digital movie rentals and purchases with Warner Bros.
This modest beginning could have long term ramifications in the streaming industry. Facebook’s 500+ million active users would offer a substantial audience that no site can rival. Facebook’s ability to tie in a person’s ‘likes’ with actual content would be a major marketing tool. Netflix, with 20 million subscribers, has the content and delivery system in place, but Facebook appears ready to move now on the initiative.
Facebook will kick things off by offering users the option to stream “The Dark Knight” directly through the social-networking site. The cost will be 30 Facebook credits, or $3, for a 48-hour viewing period. Additional titles will be available for rent or purchase in the coming months.
