Elena Kagan was sworn in as the 112th justice of the Supreme Court on Saturday. Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath just two days after the Senate confirmed her nomination. The confirmation vote was 63-37.
With Kagan’s inclusion, the court now has three women – the first time ever in history. She joins Sonia Sotomayor and Ruth Bader Ginsberg on the nation’s highest court.
Kagan’s confirmation is not expected to change the ideological balance of the court, since her views are mostly aligned with the man she’s replacing, John Paul Stevens.
