Not many designers can pride themselves in redesigning the iconic Eames chair in an ecological manner. French designer Olivia Meillassoux, who currently resides in Bangalore, India, can be proud of her Rolling Chair — a team project she worked on with Céline Coutard. The design of this piece of furniture draws inspiration from the fantastic shape of the well-known Eames Chair, but brings it closer to a futuristic, environmentally-friendly version.
Consisting of bamboo parts rolled up and glued together with ecological resin, the Rolling Chair tries to be an eco-friendly modern version of the Eames Lounge Chair designed in 1956 for the Hermann Miller furniture company. The small strips of bamboo give the chair a fantastic appeal, turning the back rest and seating space into an organic piece of furniture. Each of the bamboo strips are visible, with natural colors shaping a free-form design. The outside part of the chair is painted in a vivid color that beautifully contrasts with the natural bamboo.
