Update: Click here to download Google Maps iOS iPhone App from the Apple App Store.
Wednesday night, Apple iPhone users will be able to download the Google Maps for iOS. Yes, the Google Maps app is returning to the iPhone, thank goodness. After users have been lost, monuments disappeared, directions incorrect — all with the Apple Maps app, finally, the remedy is coming tonight, as Google launches their Google Maps iOS app.
According to Liz Gaines of AllThingsD:
Google plans to release its much-awaited iOS Maps app tonight, according to sources familiar with the matter. The app should be a welcome addition for many iPhone users, who have been unhappy with an Apple-made replacement. Google Maps had been pre-installed on the iPhone since the smartphone first launched, but the app was bounced in September with the debut of iOS 6.
Can’t wait to download the Google Maps iOS iPhone App? Us too! Finally, no more getting lost. What a great Christmas gift for Google fans (and iPhone users)… Now, we do like elements of Apple’s Map app, your experience with it really will depend on where you live and how well it’s mapped. If your area has good maps, as mine does, it will be great. I know this isn’t universally true and some users will legitimately have terrible experiences as well.
We’ll check back later with more reviews, as we’re sure MG Siegler and John Gruber will have a few opinions on the Google Maps iOS iPhone App.
A new Google Maps app wouldn’t replace Apple’s native Maps, but it would give iOS users a trustworthy maps app to use while Apple improves its own offering. There’s no offical word from Google or Apple at this time, so it’s unclear when exactly we’ll see the app show up in the App Store.
