Today’s dream home is located in the Fitzroy inner northern suburb of Adelaide, in South Australia. Even its name expresses the heavenly feeling one gets once inside this extraordinary high tech modern home: Cloud no 9. Not only contemporary looking and technologically prepared for a comfortable life, the residence also has a fascinating history. Made out of two adjacent buildings, Cloud no. 9 was initially a private horse stable and hay loft for a nearby mansion. Andrew Simpson Architects were the ones who transformed the historic 1830’s building into what it is today: an exceptional contemporary residence with sustainable features.
Renovating and adding new elements to the triple brick double-height warehouse and the adjacent two-storey hay loft transformed the empty space into a luxurious residence personalized for the extended family living here. A mezzanine level was added to the main space, creating a better spatial plan flooded with light from the impressive skylights. Just as the name states, Cloud no 9 is as comfortable and heavenly as its inspiration – the 1896 International Cloud-Atlas, where the No. 9 cloud, cumulonimbus, was described as the biggest, puffiest and most comfortable.
