The NY Times profiles Jeffrey Bale, the garden guru of the West Coast, who use of elaborate mosaics with sustainable landscape designs is turning heads.

WITH his goatee, multiple ear piercings and ice-blue eyes, Jeffrey Bale has become something of a garden guru on the West Coast, advocating sustainable yet sumptuous landscape design with elaborate mosaics. Garden bloggers swoon, calling him a “hottie” and his stonework “amazing.” Mr. Bale, a self-taught mosaicist with a two-year waiting list, spends his winters studying and seeking inspiration from stone masonry and mystical symbolism in other countries. Recently, he flew here from his base in Portland, Ore., to create a mosaic for Tony Shalhoub, the actor who starred in the television series “Monk,” and the actress Brooke Adams, his wife, who sometimes made guest appearances on the show, which ended its eighth and final season this month. – From NY Times
