The Chicago Blackhawks have won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime. The victory gives the Blackhawks their first championship since 1961.
Patrick Kane scored the winning goal 4:10 into overtime. Kane made a rush around Kimmo Timonen and wristed one past Michael Leighton so fast no one knew it was in the net. Kane did, and reacted accordingly, skating all the way down ice and jumping into Antti Niemi’s arms. A stunned crowd didn’t know how to react but the Hawks’ celebration was on.
The Blackhawks completed their revival from the bottom of the NHL to holding the silver trophy on the strength of rising stars Kane and Jonathan Toews.
