A few months ago I was lucky enough to attend a celebration of the Shelby Cobra, one of the greatest machines in automotive history, thanks to Baume and Mercier. Now the commemorative wristwatch I got a preview of at that event, the Capeland Cobra, has been released.
Available in either a stainless steel finish or 18 karat red gold, both feature a 44mm x 16.5 mm case, and have a sapphire crystal caseback through which you can see the movement of its Swiss La Joux-Perret 8147-2 automatic chronograph. The watch face is finished in Shelby’s Guardsman blue with very subtle striping across the face and picks up design details from the car’s instrument panel, even using the iconic Cobra logo on the second hand. The gold version features a Superluminova blue emission to provide a soft evening glow.
The stainless steel version is available on the Baume and Mercier web store. It sells for just $4,450 and comes with a commemorative case. Only 1,965 are available in honor of the year the Cobra won the FIA sportscar championship.
The luxurious Red Gold Flyback Capeland Cobra, is limited to just 98 timepieces – the number on the side of the first 427 Cobra racer – and available only through a Baume and Mercier retail partner.
Its cost of $19,950 includes not just the watch and the case, but owners will also be treated to a driving experience at the Spring Mountain Racetrack in Las Vegas where I was able to enjoy a ride in the 427 Cobra.
With father’s day just around the corner, either version of this commemorative Capeland watch would make a great gift for any Cobra-loving dad. Just sayin’!
