Apple has taken the wraps off their next iPhones at a conference in Cupertino, announcing the release of the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C.
The 5S is highlighted by a new iSight camera, a A7 64 bit chip, a M7 motion co-processor (used with health related apps), and a new finger print sensor, called Touch ID. The 5C is highlighted by a lower price and the multiple color options.
Here’s a rundown on some of the highlights of the new phones:
- Both new phones will use iOS 7 (the new iOS will debut on Sept. 18)
- The iPhone 5 will go away
- Both phones are the same size as the iPhone 5 (4-inch screen)
iPhone 5S
A7 Chip and M7 motion co-processor
The first 64-bit chip in a mobile phone. It is backward compatible with 32-bit applications. Apple claims the new chip doubles the processing speed of the phone. The M7 motion co-processor will be great for health applications.
Touch ID
The new fingerprint sensor is probably the most exciting part of the iPhone 5S. It takes away the need for typing in a four-digit code to access your phone. The sensor, which is built into the home button, allows you to have multiple fingers scanned into the system. You can use the sensor to make iTunes purchases.
Apple notes that your fingerprint won’t be stored on a server – but on the phone’s A7 chip.
The fingerprint scanner should open up the door for more in-phone purchases.
iSight Camera
Apple has done a lot of catch-up with the new camera. There are some nice new features, including a True Tone Flash feature, 3x video zoom, burst mode and 120fps slow motion.
Colors
The iPhone 5S will be available in gold, silver and ‘space gray’. Black is gone.
Other notes
Apple says the battery life is the same as the iPhone 5. They will also offer some new special leather cases, including a (RED) version.
Cost
16GB at $199, 32GB at $299 and 64GB at $399 – all with with contract.

iPhone 5C
Color
The iPhone 5C features a polycarbonate (plastic) casing. There are five colors – green, white, blue, red, and yellow. The buttons on the side and the wallpaper match the phone’s color. Apple is also offering special cases allowing consumers to mix colors.
Cost
The iPhone 5C will sell for $99 (16GB) and $199 for 32GB with contract. The price is a hefty $549 without contracts.
Features
The 5C is pretty much the same as the iPhone 5. It includes Siri and run the A6 chip. Apple claims the battery is better than the iPhone 5.
