Is an Apple television set in the works? Yes, according to Venture Beat. Apple is reportedly working on a digital TV based on its wildly successful iOS operating system.

An Apple television set has been rumored on and off for years, but the declining costs of LCD, plus the inroads iOS is making in the lives of consumers, is tempting Apple to make a TV set a reality.

Many analysts are predicting that by the end of 2012, or early 2013, Apple will be producing touchscreen TVs up to 20″ using iOS. While such a device won’t take over for a 50″ plasma TV, it could make inroads in the kitchen or in the bedroom, or for a student at college, or in a small apartment. Such a device could operate as a hub for an individual, allowing them to not only watch their favorite programs, but also play games, use apps, send email and engage with friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Apple has managed to define three products over the past decade – the MP3 player (iPod), the mobile phone (iPhone) and the tablet (iPad). The temptation to conquer the TV hardware market may be too great for the electronics giant.

Currently, Apple offers the Apple TV, a box that lets consumers buy and stream content.
