A canvas on the wall could hide a fascinating double function without you knowing it until you get close enough to interact. The picture of a sofa could just as easily be the sofa in a world where surprising things happen with the help of technology filtered through creativity. Designed by Japan-based YOY Design Studio, the “Canvas” series was meant to overcome the apparent limitations of furniture and encompass the unexpected. Wood and aluminum were molded into a two dimensional interactive furniture item that becomes three-dimensional when used.
Hanging on the walls, the volumetric furniture take the role of a stool, an armchair and a sofa. Painted canvas stretched across the wood and aluminum skeleton composes each of the inspiring furniture items. Silhouettes hint towards the use of each piece in the collection, while the material stretches when weight is applied to shape a seating void in the painting. Just lean it against the wall and see which one of your friends would like to experience it first.
