An Interview with Dionysis Vithoulkas, CEO, The Lesante Collection

The Greek island of Zakynthos (often dubbed Zante) is a favorite of European vacationers, but it has been gaining attention from North American travelers, in part thanks to The Lesante Collection Luxury Hotels & Resorts. Founded by CEO Dionysis Vithoulkas and his family, the trio of properties includes two that are members of The Leading Hotels of the World. They include the family-friendly Lesante Cape, adults-only Lesante Blu and romantic Lesante Classic, each targeting a slightly different audience.

As more American travelers discover the beautiful Lesante group of hotels and resorts, Vithoulkas shares a bit about what motivates him as a hotelier and how he hopes to grow his brand.

How did you get your start in hospitality?

Hospitality has always been part of my life. My father and uncle opened our first hotel in Zakynthos during the 1980s, and I grew up watching what it means to care for guests in a genuine way. From an early age, I was fascinated by how a hotel can shape someone’s experience of a destination. When I officially joined the business, my goal was to transform that family tradition into something even more meaningful. This modern, luxury brand still reflects the warmth and authenticity that define Greek hospitality.

Are you considering future properties on the island or elsewhere?

Zakynthos will always be the heart of the Lesante Collection. It’s where our story began, and it continues to inspire us every day. That said, we are exploring opportunities that align with our brand values; places with strong character, beautiful natural surroundings, and a sense of cultural authenticity. For us, expansion isn’t about scale; it’s about creating places that feel distinctly Lesante. Sustainable development, exceptional quality, and an unwavering focus on detail and service will always define how we grow.

Does being a member of hotel consortia like The Leading Hotels of the World or Preferred Hotels & Resorts help you grow business?

Absolutely. Collaborating with respected global brands gives us access to valuable networks, new audiences, and shared expertise. It allows us to benchmark ourselves against the best in the world while still maintaining the individuality that makes us who we are. These partnerships also signal to travelers that the Lesante Collection meets the highest standards of service and experience, something that’s incredibly important in the luxury segment.

Does it help you specifically with the American market?

Yes, very much so. American travelers are curious, well-traveled and value authenticity as much as comfort, and they tend to gravitate toward trusted names and curated collections, where these affiliations truly make a difference. For many U.S. guests, being part of The Leading Hotels of the World or Preferred Hotels & Resorts provides reassurance that, even on a smaller island like Zakynthos, they can expect the highest standards of service and experience.

They have helped us strengthen our presence in the U.S. market and connect with leading travel advisors who are looking for unique, world-class destinations beyond the usual paths of Greece.

What is your favorite photo spot at each of the three hotels?

At Lesante Blu, the infinity pool overlooking the Ionian Sea perfectly captures the resort’s calm elegance. At Lesante Classic, the garden terrace view toward the sea in Tsilivi. It is surrounded by greenery and light, reflecting the island’s natural rhythm.

At Lesante Cape, the main square at sunset. It features stone villas, cobblestone paths and the sea beyond. This is the heart of the resort and the most authentically Zakynthian view you can find. Each week, Greek night includes live music, dancing, plate smashing and an authentic island menu.

What is the biggest challenge in hospitality right now?

The industry is changing rapidly. Today’s travelers are looking for more than luxury; they want connection, authenticity, and sustainability. Balancing those expectations while maintaining consistent service standards is a challenge for every operator. We also face ongoing staffing and training pressures post-pandemic. The key is to stay adaptable, invest in our people, and keep the guest experience at the center of everything we do.

What do you love most about Zakynthos?

Zakynthos is home. It’s where I grew up and where our family story began, so every corner of the island feels personal to me. I love its authenticity. Life here moves at its own pace, surrounded by the sea, vineyards, and olive groves, all touched by the island’s soft Venetian influences. What makes Zakynthos truly special is that it remains elegant without trying to be luxurious yet deeply real.

Even as it has evolved into a world-class destination for hotels, gastronomy and wine, it has never lost its soul. For me, sharing that beauty and spirit with travelers is one of the greatest privileges of my work.
