The roads outside of Minneapolis, Minnesota, the state with 10,000 lakes, served as the road test bed for the new Genesis GV80 Coupe, the latest addition to the Korean automaker’s impressive luxury car and SUV lineup.
Pursutist first saw the GV80 Coupe as a concept vehicle at Genesis House in Manhattan, New York, during the 2024 New York International Auto Show.
According to Genesis, “The GV80 Coupe effortlessly maximizes utility and sportiness with a distinctive design package, encompassing a dynamic exterior and a sporty, high-tech interior, complemented by a 3.5-liter gasoline turbo 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C) engine.” We agree with the Genesis statement, as the 2025 GV80 Coupe was as impressive to drive as it is to look at.
GV80 Coupe Exterior
“The addition of the sporty Coupe to the GV80 family brings a new expression of athleticism and invigorating performance to the Genesis lineup,” said José Muñoz, president and CEO of Genesis Motor North America and president and global chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor Company. “Both the new SUV and Coupe models bring refined performance and bold design to the portfolio, each with their own distinct character for customers to choose.”
Although I had previewed the GV80 Coupe at Genesis House, seeing it outside on display at our host hotel cemented my true appreciation of the design. Where some European-manufactured SUV Coupes look bulbous to me, the GV80 Coupe’s lines are smooth and the body proportions are just right.
Up front, a redesigned fascia with what Genesis calls the Crest Grille with a G-Matrix, dual-layered design makes a bold statement; further enhanced with a larger air curtain, flanked by a pair of larger air intakes. Genesis’ “Two-Line” theme starts up front with LED two-line headlamps, continues with two-line side markers, and ends at the rear with two-line LED taillamps.
When viewed from the side, the arch-shaped Parabolic Line spanning the body and the low, sloping roofline are strong statements of the dynamic exterior design.
At the rear, the GV80 Coupe features a unique design with LED surface-emitting rear combination lamps and a wide integrated auxiliary brake light on the tailgate. The roof-mounted rear spoiler is functional and looks great. Depending on engine choice, your GV80 Coupe will be outfitted with dual single or quad exhaust tips, part of the design theme that according to Genesis, elevates Expression, Form, Excitement, and the Commanding Nature of the GV80 Coupe, versus the popular GV80 SUV.
The GV80’s sporty profile also features GV80 Coupe-exclusive 20- and 22-inch wheels with distinctive spoke designs.
GV80 Coupe Interior
The new GV80 Coupe GV80 promises an elevated in-car experience with new convenience features for enhanced comfort and safety.
“The addition of the sporty Coupe to the GV80 family brings a new expression of athleticism and invigorating performance to the Genesis lineup,” said José Muñoz. “Both the new SUV and Coupe models bring refined performance and bold design to the portfolio, each with their own distinct character for customers to choose.”
The interior of the GV80 Coupe features a meaty D-cut steering wheel and unique carbon garnish patterns and seats with coupe-exclusive patterns and stitching further contribute to the refined design.
The standard Ergo Motion Seat uses air pockets that control the amount of air within the bags and customize seating posture based on the passenger’s weight. This advanced seat design comes with a total of seven air pockets: two in the bottom cushion, three in the backrest and one in each side bolster.
The Ergo Motion Seat also comes with a massage function, and the driver can manually adjust the size of the airbags. The system works well, as my Sasquatchian 6’9” frame benefited from the features the Ergo Motion Seat offers.
Metal accents were added to the brake and accelerator pedals to minimize the risk of slipping during operation and to maximize high-performance sensibility.
A 27-inch-wide OLED display integrates the multimedia screen, and the center touchscreen controls HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), audio, mobile phone integration, and other functions.
On the lower console, a high-end crystal-like shifter adds an additional luxury touch to the interior.
There’s also a redesigned wireless smartphone charging tray, an enlarged console cup holder, and hard volume and tuning knobs for the entertainment system, which offers impressive sonic quality. The all-new infotainment system is part of the GV80 Coupe’s Connected Car Integrated Cockpit. Key features include AM/FM/XM Radio/HD Radio, Cloud Profiles, Connected Routing, Dynamic Voice Recognition, OTA updates, Android Auto & wireless Apple CarPlay, and an optional Bang & Olufsen 18 Speaker, 1,400 Watt, 14-Channel Amplifier all controlled via a 27” integrated OLED screen.
GV80 Coupe Performance/Road Manners
The company responsible for outlining our drive route for the GV80 Coupe, Automotive Events, and selected roads that highlighted the car’s dynamic nature. A variety of backroad twisties, combined with some city and highway driving with varying road surfaces yielded a drive that showed zero weaknesses in the GV80 Coupe’s comfort, luxury, and performance game.
Some of my media colleagues cited numb steering, but to me, the vehicle is just done right, on all fronts.
GV80 Coupe offers two gasoline engine choices, including the gasoline 3.5L V6 Twin Turbo with a 48V electric supercharger (e-S/C), outputting 409 horsepower. The standard all-wheel-drive system is programmed for rear-wheel power bias in dry weather modes. A Sport + drive mode, launch control, and sport stability control mode are additional performance goodies.
It’s clear that despite the higher performance of the GV80 Coupe, attention to NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) was a key goal for the vehicle’s engineers. This is a very quiet vehicle, with virtually no wind or road noise present at high speeds with all windows up.
