The 2012 Lexus IS250 and the more powerful IS350 are the second generation of the smallest of the Lexus sedans. Offering sporty character and a tidy interior layout, that is sure to please even the most discerning tastes. Lexus has clearly targeted the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C Class and it shows both in comparable size and feel in the IS line.
Looking at the IS from the outside, one instantly notices the Lexus family resemblance; the look is elegant, yet understated, with touches of technology in the lighting as well as contemporary design cues in the sheet metal. Inside, the driver and passengers are greeted by an interior that is a sanctuary of harmony and quality. Practical and well thought-of details abound, from the intelligent keyless feature; the LED ambient lighting and the smart audio system when selecting music styles. Interior fit and finish is typical Lexus, with soft touch points throughout the cabin as well as excellent feedback from the switchgear. Seating is sporty in nature, featuring optional climate controlled driver and passenger seats. Rear seating is typical for a sport sedan, that is to say, ok for two, tight for three. The trunk offers premium quality finishes, which include a cargo net for small parcels, convenient slots for storing items. Cargo space is generous, limited only by the trunk opening space.
On the highway, the IS250 is surprisingly nimble; simply press the “go” pedal and it does just that. Frankly, the smaller engine version is probably more than adequate for the great majority of urban drivers. The feel of the sports steering wheel, brakes and transmission are well balanced, never intrusive yet magically involving. This is exactly as expected from a Lexus sedan. Steering paddle shifters are also a nice touch. Especially when the driver feels like being directly involved with the gear shifting.
The various versions of the IS from Lexus are excellent among small sedans, with the IS250 offering 30+ MPG on the highway and a 450 mile range between fill ups, plus a wonderful driving experience that is on par with the worlds’ best.
