Now that summer has melted into autumn, we take advantage of the last days of warm sunshine and linger in the garden after sunset. The atmosphere reflects this changing of seasons in the objects we surround ourselves with. Lights made of wicker are a choice that keeps the material palette natural, but wicker lamps reminiscent of marine animals, cute characters or acorns showcase how tradition can become visually modern.
Medusa, Chinita and Bellota are three enchanting wicker lamps created by Claesson Koivisto Rune in collaboration with Made in Mimbre (by The Andes House, Chile). Local artisans have woven these modern lighting objects using their valued local weaving techniques while following a contemporary design pattern. Illuminating with a warm and enchanting light, these traditionally woven lamps received Spanish names that celebrate the origins of the manufacturer.
The oval-shaped Medusa lamps keep the excess wicker that are usually trimmed in order to elongate their bodies. Between these wicker mustaches, three slim supports help ground the design and act as reminders of the lamps’ inspiration. The Chinita lamps expose an influence of cute characters so trendy nowadays. “Almost as if they have been nipped and then pulled, four ‘feet’ appear to have been stretched from the bottom edge of the CHINITA lamps. We think that the gesture results in a series of lamps with a cute, creature-like character. “ Finally, the Bellota lamps display two similar shapes that make a whole. The inspiration comes from the shape of an acorn, distinctively displaying a natural background.
