Zaha Hadid Exhibit At Masterpiece London

The art, antiques and design fair at Masterpiece London, from June 30 – July 6, will commemorate the life and work of the late Zaha Hadid through the exhibition of some of her lesser-known works.

Zaha Hadid: not just an architect

The late Iraqi-born British architect, who passed away in March 2016 aged 65, may have been known predominantly for her extravagant parametric and neo-futurist designs such as the Guangzhou Opera House in China and the aquatic centre for the London 2012 Olympics, but she also worked in other artistic spheres. Throughout her career, Hadid also worked on furniture, jewellery and shoe designs, as well as painting. This lesser-known side to Hadid, who was named a Dame in 2012 and awarded a RIBA Gold Medal in 2015, is to be celebrated during the Masterpiece London fair. A retrospective of Hadid’s work is also currently being held at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Curated by the CEO of David Gill Gallery, Francis Sultana, the London Masterpiece salon will feature pieces from Hadid’s Liquid Glacial furniture collection, sketches, photographs, paintings, personal items and fashion pieces such as her United Nude Nova shoes and reinterpretation of the Louis Vuitton “Icone bag.” Hadid’s drafting tools will also be on display, as well as an audio recording.

Masterpiece London 2016

The Masterpiece London design fair features a cross-disciplinary selection of work from over 150 galleries around the world. Last year, the now six-year-old event drew 40,000 visitors to its venue at the Royal Hospital in London’s chic Chelsea district.

Known as one of the most glamorous fairs of its genre, Masterpiece London has previously been known for focusing on luxury products. This year’s educational program includes a talk on British decorative arts by curators from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Masterpiece London is taking place from June 30 through July 6. General admission tickets for one day cost £28. For more information, visit the site at www.masterpiecefair.com.
