The 67th Tony Awards became a celebration of ‘firsts’ for women. The Tony’s handed its top directing prizes to two women – Pam MacKinnon for directing Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Diane Paulus for the revival of the musical Pippin.

But the girl power didn’t stop there with Cyndi Lauper becoming the first solo woman to win a Tony for musical score. Lauper’s score would help propel Kinky Boots as the winner for Best Musical.

Other key awards went to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike for Best Play, Pippin for Best Rivival of a Musical, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? for Best Revival of a Play. In the acting category, Kinky Boots’ Billy Porter took the actor award, while Pippin’s Patina Miller won for Lead Actress.

Women weren’t the only victors in this year’s Tony’s. Four actors of color snagged acting honors, including Patina Miller, Cicely Tyson, Courtney B. Vance and Billy Porter.

Finally, kudos to Neil Patrick Harris for another great performance as host.
