Ways to Build the Strengths of Your Team Members

In order to lead a successful team, you need to do more than just assigning work. Good managers/leaders recognize the strengths of their team members and capitalize on them. However, strengthening your team members isn’t as easy it seems.

First, you need to understand their strengths and weaknesses. Then, you need to leverage their strengths while helping them overcome their weaknesses. You also need to consider roster for staff is as they want it because when they’re not happy with their schedule, it is difficult to get them to give their best.

That said, let’s look at some of the best ways to strengthen your team members:

1 – Leverage Individual Strengths to Achieve Team’s Goals

Conduct one-on-one interviews to understand the strengths of each of your team members. Then, analyze how you can use it in their current projects. Also, as mentioned above, ask them what time they prefer to work and optimize their roster, if possible. You can use Xero rostering software to manage and change their schedules.

If you don’t see any usage of their strengths in their current projects, look for other projects within the organization to get the most out of their skills.

2 – Create an Open-Door Policy

It is essential to allow employees to speak their minds. By adopting an open-door policy, you can encourage them to reach the manager with feedback or issues. This will assure them that they are valued in the organization and build their strength.

Another benefit of an open-door policy is that it builds psychological safety, which can lead them to be creative, take risks, and speak their mind without fearing that they would lose the job.

3 – Embrace Diversity

Diversity has become a hot topic now. But, just because everyone is expecting businesses to hire people from diverse backgrounds and experiences, you should do that. But, you should do that because the more diverse your employees are, the more diverse solutions you will get.

In fact, a Harvard Business Review found that diversity helps strengthen teams faster. So begin with rethinking your recruitment strategy and hire people from different backgrounds and experiences.

4 – Focus on Continual Improvement

Just knowing the strengths and weaknesses of your team members is not enough. You need to help them further improve their strengths and better their weaknesses. This can be done with continuous training and coaching. Given the current scenario, you can provide your team with online courses that help them improve their skills over time. Also, see if you can fit them in other departments if they desire. This will boost their morale and help strengthen your team (as only people who are really interested in it will be there).

5 – Provide Regular Training

Apart from helping them improve their skills, you also need to provide project-related training regularly to enhance their strengths. You can even consider combining marketing, sales, customer support, and product development teams while coaching so they can all learn from each other and provide better services to customers.

This will also help them understand how each department works, building empathy for them. As a result, your team members will begin to trust each other more and work better than they do.

6 – Focus on Results More than Working Hours

While many employers give importance to how many hours their employees are working every day, we believe it’s better to let them decide the number of hours they want to work unless and until they’re delivering what they’re supposed to. Even several studies have found that when employees are given flexible hours, they tend to be more productive and deliver their work faster.

By adopting a flexible working hour policy in your organization, you will make your employees happy and strengthen the team.

Conclusion

A good team manager understands the importance of strengthening the team. And since you’ve come this long, it shows how committed you are in building the strengths of your team members. Use the six strategies mentioned above to boost your employees’ morale, help them improve their productivity, and strengthen them from the core.
