Deadline.com has announced that British director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) is set to direct Tom Cruise in a movie based on 1960s series, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The Hollywood actor has apparently started talks in the hope of playing one of the two heroes: spies Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin.

One is American and the other is Russian but they both work within the same anti-terrorist agency in the series set during the Cold War.

Tom Cruise’s name has been linked to the project since George Clooney’s withdrawal. The latter was supposed to be directed by Steven Soderbergh who also backed out.

Since then, the names of Channing Tatum, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Joel Kinnaman and Michael Fassbender have been mentioned but nothing definite has come of it. Warner Bros still needs to find Tom Cruise’s partner.

The actor already plays the lead in the Mission: Impossible franchise based on an old TV series.
