Thonet’s sculpted Beech wood bike is an expensive way to go green

“Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder”, an old phrase can very well be used to describe this panache work of art, ‘a wooden bicycle’ by the London based designer, Andy Martin and a furniture company named Thonet.

As you can see, the bike is all wooden and is certainly a new marvel in this jungle of plastic, steel & aluminum; reminding us of the old days when generally everything was made out of wood. The design of this bike is limited to minimal components with just thin wood beams, steam-bended to the shapes of body bars and handles engaged to connectors, sprung rods etc., which reinforce the bike’s joints and stress areas in its frame. The wheels are made from lightweight carbon fiber and its solid beech wood seat rests on sprung rods for comfortable and easy maneuvering of the bike.

Though, this bike is beautifully conceptualized but lacks some basic features like braking. Yes, you read it right; as you can see there are no brakes in the bike. The only method to avoid bumping into someone while riding this bike is by riding at a slow speed and paddling in reverse for slowing down and braking. But, one question that still remains unanswered is how the rider would control speed while riding it down the hill.

In totality, this bike is certainly a beauty to keep and not meant for everyday use as it is priced at a whopping £43,715, nearly twice as expensive as the Range Rover Evoque, which is sold for around £27,955.
