Sassoon’s Blow & Style Menu Offers a Welcome Upgrade to the Standard Blow Out Bar

We’ll admit it, we’re blowout junkies. We love the fresh-from-the-salon look of having our hair perfectly coiffed and styled. And with all of the on-the-go options, it’s easy to achieve this look for a reasonable cost. So when one of our favorite luxury salons, Sassoon Salonlaunched a Blow & Style menu as an addition to their already industry leading offerings, we were among the first to want to test it out. The salon just launched a new “seasonal” addition to its menu — an on-trend rope braid and a luxe volume blowout — and we headed over to test them for ourselves.

We love that Sassoon takes an editorial approach to its style menu, offering seasonal looks inspired by runway trends.

The blowout isn’t as straightforward as a standard “blow dry bar only” approach, either. The appointment begins with a consultation, where stylists determine how exactly a preferred style will work with your hair. I was attending an event after my appointment, and so the stylist at the Tysons Galleria location suggested adding some light iron work to add additional movement to the volume style (seen below) that I’d chosen.

She also suggested adding a strengthening and volumizing mask (normally $40) that would add bounce to my hair for 6 to 8 weeks. Five minutes and a relaxing scalp massage later, I was in heaven.

Throughout the blowout, Tracy, my stylist, discussed exactly what she was doing, asking questions about how I normally care for my hair and pointing out tips to both protect my hair and extend the life of my blowout. For example, with long hair, like my own, lift sections with your hands to blow air downward on the hair shaft, rather than flipping your head upside down in an attempt to gain extra volume. Blowing upside down can “roughen up” the hair texture, leaving hair less smooth and potentially damaged.

After drying my hair in sections, she expertly added volume by rolling and clipping each area away from my face to let hair cool and give it shape. For on-the-go gals like myself, she suggested doing only the front 3-4 sections of hair to maximize results with minimal time spent. Once hair is ready to go, use a volumizing yet texturizing product to allow hair to “settle,” such as Kerastase Volume in Powder ($37) that will serve as a combination volumizer, hair spray, and texturizer. Throughout the day, fluff hair underneath to re-activate volume without disturbing the shine and smoothness of the top layer.

I’m normally not one to buy products from an appointment, but loved that this spray served the duties of three of my usual supplies, so I snagged one post blowout. I’ve used it daily since!

We also discussed potential new style updates, and even had a mini color consult while in the chair.

I loved that it was a pampering yet teachable experience, and I felt that I really learned a few tips for making my hair look good at home. Not once did I feel a product or style push, something I was concerned about, as I have a stylist that I’ve been loyal to for many years.

While I love my standard “blow only” bar, for just $20 more than my usual appointment price ($60) I felt like I got a lesson and a great style all in one, plus great advice for my next post-wedding adventure – hair color. The mask worked too; I’ve had noticeably more volume in recent weeks. I look forward to visiting again soon.

Sassoon services were offered free of charge, but opinions are the author’s own.
