Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York apartment, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday:

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine exact cause of death. The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46 years old, was found dead at his apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The actor was found in the bathroom of his fourth floor apartment in the Pickwick House around 11:15 a.m. by a screenwriter, who called 911, the official said.

The New York Post reported that Hoffman died from “an apparent drug overdose.”

Last year, Hoffman checked himself into rehab because he had started doing heroin after 23 years of sobriety.

The dynamic Hoffman had a long and critically-acclaimed career as an actor, appearing in films such as “Boogie Nights” (1997), “The Talented Mr. Ripley” (1999), and “The Master” (2012). He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Capote” in 2005.

The Fairport, N.Y., native is survived by longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell, and their three children, daughters Willa and Tallulah, and a son, Cooper.

Reporters and fans crowded outside Hoffman’s building:

“There are no words. It’s just terrible,” stated George Clooney. Here’s more reactions from other Hollywood stars:
