PURSUITIST RECOMMENDED: We simply adore the Mumm Napa DVX Napa Valley Sparkling 2006. During our Christmas Day gathering, it went perfectly with our brunch. All guests enjoyed DXV incredibly — our only regret is that we only had one bottle on hand. As you plan your party for New Years, remember to plan accordingly — as people are very much attracted to the DVX, tart and crisp, with a soft biscuit flavor. It is a 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, 30% barrel fermented some some malo-lactic fermentation, and blended from 12 lots. This wine received 92 points from the Wine Spectator and 94 from Wine Enthusiast. It’s a delicate wine, with a lemony cream nose. Clean finish on a soft mousse of bubbles with good persistence.

This prestigious tête de cuvée honors the visionary work of Guy Devaux. DVX wines capture the soul of Napa Valley fruit through meticulous selection of the best lots of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2006 DVX offers a brilliant golden-yellow hue with a gentle stream of tiny bubbles. As is the tradition with DVX, the 2006 DVX is complex, rich and nicely balanced. Toasted brioche with a hint of oak spice greet you on the nose, followed by green apple, ripe freestone peaches and fresh raspberry on the palate. The 2006 DVX has a lovely vanilla creaminess on the mid palate and ends with a lingering, refreshing finish. Overall, it balances complexity and power with an elegant finesse that has become the signature DVX style

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino’s Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.
