MoMA’s Video Game Collection

New York’s Museum of Modern Art is bringing in a video game collection, starting in March, with a selection of 14 iconic titles.

With video games making their way to museums around the world, MoMA provides the latest proof that they are now enjoying proper art form status. In March 2013, the art insitution will premiere a permanent video game expo in the Philip Johnson gallery.

The selection was based on various criteria including impact on gaming history, story, gameplay, soundtrack and overall esthetics. The first batch of iconic titles, released between 1980 and 2009, encompasses Pac-Man, Tetris, SimCity 2000, The Sims, EVE Online, Portal, Myst, Another World, vib-ribbon, Katamari Damacy, Dwarf Fortress, flOW, Passage and Canabalt.

MoMA plans to add new titles in the future, including Spacewar!, one of the first games in history, which dates back to 1962, Pong, Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros, Minecraft, Snake, Asteroids, The Legend of Zelda, Street Fighter II and Animal Crossing.
