Mercedes-Benz unveiled its first all-electric SUV in Stockholm this week, going head to head with Tesla.

It is Mercedes’ first-ever electric car and it has been designed from the ground up. The EQC earns its three-pointed star badge with 400 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and a full slate of high-tech gadgets. A lithium-ion battery will power the vehicle to a 110-mile-per-hour top speed and push it from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.1 seconds.

“With the EQC – the first fully electric SUV from Mercedes-Benz – we are flipping the switch. Electric drive is a major component in the mobility of the future. We are therefore investing more than ten billion euros in the expansion of our EQ model portfolio, and more than one billion euros in global battery production,” said Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Daimler announced that it wants 2022 to be its electric year, saying that by then it hopes to have a total of 10 electric models on the road.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC is a smart start. For the most part, the EQC looks like a Mercedes-Benz crossover SUV with a sporty shape but there are few unique touches, like the black panel running under the grill between the headlights — but at night, it is a line of white light.

Mercedes has not yet announced pricing for the new model but it will go on sale in the United States in 2020.
