Maison Margiela “Replica Filter Blur” Perfumed Body Oil

Originally a technique used for beauty products, layering — applying several products to the face or body in different layers — has now landed in the world of fragrance. Maison Margiela has joined the trend with its own layering system, based on two perfumed dry body oils, or “filters,” set to land this summer.

Also known as the art of “saho,” the layering technique comes straight from Japan, and essentially involves building up several cosmetic products on the face or body, from cleanser, serum and moisturizer to lotions and facial washes. Layering has been “a thing” in the realm of beauty products for several years, and the technique recently crossed over into the world of perfume.

Maison Margiela is to release two dry body oils called “Glow” and “Blur.” These fragranced “filters” are designed for use with one of the ten scents from the brand’s “Replica” collection. The oils act like a filter, applying an effect — like the photo filters used on social networks — to create a new fragrance blend and a signature scent for each wearer.

Two filters, two effects

The “Glow” body oil is a fresh and bright filter, capturing “the vibrancy of a sunny afternoon.” This contrasting perfumed oil is based on vigorous notes of neroli, grapefruit blossom, bergamot and rose absolute.

“Blur” brings an artistic “soft focus” effect to a signature scent, for softness and subtlety. This dry oil is fragranced with aldehydes, jasmine and musk, and acts as a filter to soften an original perfume for a more sophisticated effect.

The two “Replica Filters” can be used over the whole body or even in hair, and are best applied straight from the shower. Next, layer a dash of one of the brand’s “Replica” fragrances (“Lazy Sunday Morning,” “Beach Walk,” “Flower Market,” “Tea Escape,” “Jazz Club”) over the top of the filter.

Maison Margiela “Replica Filters” are due out August 16.
