An era has ended.

Comedian Jerry Lewis announced today that he was retiring – after 45 years – as the host of the annual Muscular Dystrophy Labor Day telethon.

Lewis began the telethon on a single NYC channel in 1966, raising more than $1 million to help fight muscular dystrophy. The telethon has grown over the years and now takes in $60 million annually.

Lewis will make an appearance at this year’s event. On September 4, he will sing his famed song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” as part of the six-hour special.

Thanks for the memories, Jerry.
