Illusions seem to be one of the roads to design creativity. As we’ve seen before, designers find new ways of presenting function within the modern home. With the 3D printing industry taking off, illusions in the 2D design world compose a crevasse in our perception, provoking us to think about things from different perspectives.

The Flatlight Candle Holder is actually a thin brass sheet cut into an illusion-based shape that reinterprets the way we see flat surfaces. Functional objects displaying intriguing designs need the perfect material to be molded into their final shape. Brass was chosen because it’s durable, rust-free and easy to recycle. Furthermore, it can be be cut using a highly modern technique called photochemical etching.

According to designer Nir Chehanowski of Tel Aviv based Studio Cheha, the idea originally came as an “Eureka!” moment, opening his eyes to new possibilities. Optical illusions paved the way to a fascinating object design, capturing this art in a sleek and simple candlelight holder: “It all started with the design of simple candlestick holder, which I stripped to its most basic form. After months of playing with and drawing different prototypes, I arrived at the perfect product that combines a classic object with modern design.” With a thickness of 0.4mm, the Flatlight Candle Holder is a Kickstarter project that will be available in natural brass, as well as a selected range of colors.
