For travelers seeking an authentic off-the-beaten path adventure, the Fogo Island Inn – seemingly at the edge of the earth in Newfoundland, Canada – is well worth the hops, skips and jumps it takes to get there. Zita Cobb, a local woman who left the island to seek her livelihood and fortune returned to the island with a refreshed vision for a community-based business in this forward-thinking inn.

Every detail within this high-concept Norwegian-influenced structure designed by architect Todd Saunders, a Newfoundland native, from the eco-conscious practices right down to the hand-loomed rugs – connects back to the island. Area boat-builders were re-trained as furniture makers, a guild of quilters stitched the bespoke bedspreads found in every room and the in-house chef is committed to foraged, caught or grown food that’s as locally sourced and seasonal as possible.
