How to Prevent Impurities in Your Household Plumbing

Pursuitist Luxury Best Luxury Blog

The tap water that is found in your property’s plumbing may be rife with impurities. Some impurities can cause very serious health issues.

Fortunately, there are steps that you can take in order to accurately identify the origins of the contaminants. Once you have identified the source, you can take subsequent steps in order to avoid them in the future.

Water impurities can be avoided by using the right filters and materials. Here, we will focus on how you can prevent impurities in your household plumbing.

What are water impurities?

Water contaminants may consist of suspended as well as dissolved particles. When the impurities reach a drinking water supply, they can harm the people who ingest them.

Some impurities are well dissolved, and can only be eliminated via a state-of-the-art water-treatment process. Others are visible to the naked eye.

What are the most common impurities in tap water?

Microorganisms like fungi, algae, and bacteria are common. Viruses will adversely affect cell growth as well as tissue health, and are invisible to the naked eye. They can be very dangerous, and can survive for a prolonged period of time.

Dissolved inorganic ions will cause water instability. The growth of tissue and cells will be delayed, and they may also trigger other biological and chemical reactions.

Pyrogens, such as LPS, can infect the spinal fluid as well as the blood. Pyrogens can be very toxic, and may cause fevers. Dissolved organic compounds are derived from plant and animal decay and can make people very ill.

Suspended particles may include silt, clay, vegetation, and sand, and may cause turbidity.

What are the effects of harmful impurities in water?

Drinking contaminated water may cause cholera, which can prove fatal. It can also cause diarrhea and/or dysentery, which may lead to dehydration, malnutrition, blood loss, and even death.

Nausea and giardia are also commonly caused by tainted water. Giardia is caused by a parasite, and the intestinal problems that giardia causes can last for years.

Stomach aches and metal poisoning are also possible side effects of drinking contaminated water. Lead or mercury poisoning can cause death in a matter of minutes in some cases.

How to Detect the Presence of Harmful Impurities in the Water

Test strips are strips that will change colour when exposed to certain chemicals. Insert the strip and wait for a few minutes before removing it.

You will then need to compare the colour of the strip to the colours of the included colour chart in order to determine the concentration of the chemical.

Colour disk kits are more accurate than test strips, but they are also more expensive and time consuming. To use a colour disk kit, you will first need to add a packet of powder to a water sample that is housed in a reusable plastic tube.

The tube will then need to be inserted into a clear box that includes a disk with a colour gradient. Rotate the disk until you find the colour that matches your sample in order to determine the concentration of the chemical in question.

Hand-held digital instruments are yet another option. You can choose from portable and lightweight photometers, colorimeters, and digital meters.

Hand-held digital instruments will provide accurate results, but they are also more delicate and more expensive than test strips and colour disk kits. While you can gauge water purity using testing kits, you will get more accurate results by hiring a professional.

Different Ways to Prevent Impurities in Your Household Plumbing

You should only use quality materials for your plumbing. Add top-of-the-line water filters to your water supply. You can disinfect water by adding iodine or chlorine, or by boiling water for at least 3 minutes.

You can use reverse osmosis in order to pressurize and force your drinking water through a fine membrane. You can also heat water until it evaporates, thus leaving behind virtually all of the impurities in a process known as distillation.

Professional plumbers will also install the proper filters and make the necessary repairs and installations to ensure that your pipes do not leak. Leaked pipes can allow pathogens and other impurities to enter your drinking water supply.

Be Proactive

First, you will need to identify the impurities that have tainted your water before you can take the necessary steps to remove them. Minor impurities can be removed via filtration, while serious impurities will require a dedicated process in order to eliminate.

Water contamination is commonly caused by damaged pipes, which may cause water leakage. A licensed and bonded plumber can fix, replace, and/or maintain your pipes in order to ensure that you don’t have leaky pipes.

Do not wait until the last minute to fix your plumbing if you suspect that your water supply may be contaminated.
