Out of all the rooms in your home, you almost surely spend more time in the bedroom than anywhere else. Between sleeping, getting ready and everything else you might do in there, many of us may end up spending about half of our day in the room.
As a result, you want it to look great and be a comfortable place to be. This often begins with your bed. It needs to be supportive, comfortable and large enough for your needs and the needs of your family (here are some ideas if you’re looking for a great mattress for you and your partner).
But in addition to your bed looking great and being cozy, you also need to ensure your room is organized. If you don’t make an effort to keep your room organized, it can turn into a disaster incredibly quickly. It can make it hard to find things, hard to walk through the room and simply looks terrible.
Thankfully, we’re here to help you out. This article is going to go over a couple of tips to help keep your bedroom organized.
Get Some Storage Furniture
One of the best ways to make organizing your bedroom easier is to invest in some storage furniture. Most of us don’t have a ton of room in the bedroom for a ton of cabinets, shelves or boxes to store things in. If we put too many of these, it takes up all the square footage of the room and makes it look too cramped and congested. This is where storage furniture can come into the picture.
Storage furniture can maintain its primary role as a piece of furniture to sit or lay on, while also giving you more places to store things. This could be a storage bench at the end of your bed, an ottoman, or even a bed with built-in storage beneath it. It will be extra storage that doesn’t take up anymore space. Storage furniture comes in all different shapes, sizes and colors, so you are sure to be able to find something that will fit the decor of your room.
Have a Place for Everything
While having storage is great, you also need to ensure you take time to have a place for everything. If you don’t have a specific spot for each item to go, you are more likely to just leave them anywhere and could end up misplacing them.
Take stock of everything you keep in your room, and make note of where you want it to go and be kept. Be sure to keep track of everything, as if you begin to forget or put things in the wrong place, it can make being organized a struggle.
As for where you put certain things, that is up to you. However, the things you use frequently or need should be kept accessible, and the things you don’t can often be tucked away a little more. After you use something, be sure to put it back where it belongs right after you’re done, so it doesn’t get missed or forgotten.
Get Rid of Things You Don’t Need or Use
Most of us have way too many “things” in our bedroom and around our home, and could survive with a lot less. Old electronics, clothes we never wear and various other items fill our home and can contribute to the clutter or mess in the bedroom. It simply looks unkempt having so many things, especially if they are hardly ever getting touched.
As a result, instead of trying to find more and more ways to organize everything you have, why not try and get rid of what you can? The less you have, the less you will need to worry about organizing and storing away items. Take an afternoon to go through everything and make a pile for things you will keep, and others you don’t need. Then, decide to sell, donate or throw away the items you don’t want anymore. You will feel much better not having so many things to worry about, as well.
Use the Walls
One of the most underrated ways to improve the storage and organization in your bedroom is to use the walls. There are many great ways to put that wasted vertical space to good use. You can use hooks, add some shelves, put up a bookcase or even stack things on top of bookcases or dressers.
You can also use the backs of doors to hang things, as well as hang racks or organizers from your closet for even more storage potential. This has the potential to organize dozens and dozens more items, without taking up any extra floor space (or very little).
Of course, be careful not to have too much on the wall, as it can look a little tacky and make the room look far too busy.
Have a Cleaning Routine
Keeping your room clean is another great way to ensure it stays organized. If it is a mess, you will have a hard time tracking everything down and making sure it gets put away. Instead of just cleaning once in a blue moon, it’s a good idea to have a cleaning routine that you adhere to on a regular basis. You should clean the floor, clean your desk, clean the closet and clean other things at least once a week.
The more frequently you clean up and organize your room, the less chance it will have of becoming a major issue. Do a little bit every day or week, and it will make those infrequent larger cleanings a lot easier to manage.
By using these five bedroom organization tips, you can ensure that your room looks and functions just the way you want it to. Staying organized isn’t always easy, and can be challenging to do at times, but is certainly something worthwhile to consider doing.
