The world’s most famous office building is having a birthday.

The Empire State Building will celebrate its 80th birthday on May 1, 2011.

Standing 1,454 feet above Midtown Manhattan, the Empire State Building (ESB) is one of the most recognized designs in the nation, and has become a symbol for New York City, and a top destination for tourists. For more than 40 years it was the world’s tallest building.

The Empire State Building was designed by William F. Lamb from the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. It was built in only 410 days.

The ESB has been part of pop culture, playing key roles in movies such as King Kong, an Affair to Remember, Independence Day and Sleepless in Seattle.

In addition to hosting hundreds of offices and shops, the ESB serves as the center of New York City’s broadcasting operations.

No trip to NYC is complete without a visit to the iconic building. The Empire State Building Observatories are open 365 days per year from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m. For more information about the iconic landmark, please visit www.esbnyc.com.
