Del Dios Ranch, San Diego County’s Most Expensive Listing

Rancho Santa Fe in San Diego County, is no stranger to luxury homes but Del Dios Ranch made a big splash earlier this year when it hit the market.

The property has long been known as one of the largest in the area, commanding a grand expanse of land inside The Covenant, Rancho Santa Fe’s exclusive enclave of luxury homes. The property was the was the longtime home of businessman Roland Sahm and his wife, Ramona who were were well-known philanthropists in the San Diego community and also owners of Thoroughbred racehorses.

In the early 1970s, the Sahms commissioned  architect Fred Briggs to design a grand concrete, glass and redwood contemporary main residence and guest house. They then hired esteemed interior designer Arthur Elrod to create the dramatic interiors. Both talents were at the peak of their skills and the the home, which took three years to construct, uses reclaimed redwood from northern California; foundations of poured-in-place concrete; and marble floors that were meticulously laid without any grout. In addition, interior wood and cabinetry were milled on the property.

The four-bedroom home also includes a great room with vaulted ceilings and a beautiful light-filled pavilion that houses the home’s indoor pool and spa. The pavilion itself is over 3,000 square feet.

The property also includes an outdoor tennis court, a six-stall equestrian barn adjoined by corrals and pastures, a lake, and an organic lemon grove. Some of the surrounding land is developable.
