Last year, Gourmet magazine ended a 70 year print run, much to the dismay of foodies around the world. Now comes word that publisher Conde Nast will resurrect the venerable brand later this year as an app.

The product, dubbed “Gourmet Live,” was designed to incorporate the content of the magazine into a application that uses social networking, virtual rewards and other features found in popular apps like Foursquare.

The Gourmet Live app will be free, with users receiving a limited number of articles, recipes, video demonstrations and slide shows. People who surpass a certain threshold of usage will be prompted to sign up for a membership. Conde Nast executives are testing membership models, but the cost likely be about as much as a yearly magazine subscription.

The Gourmet Live app will be developed using the Apple-backed HTML5 so it is expected to be available on the iPad as well as a number of other devices.

Conde Nast has apps for GQ, Vanity Fair and Wired. Glamour and The New Yorker will be coming soon – and Gourmet Live by end of the year.
