breakfast-at-tiffanysTruman Capote’s original 1958 typed manuscript of ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ will be auctioned by RR Auctions later this month. The manuscript is expected to fetch at least $250,000. Hundreds of other Hollywood-themed items, including memorabilia autographed by James Dean, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Carole Lombard, Judy Garland and Lucille Ball, are part of the online auction.

The ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ manuscript is considered the crown jewel of the auction. The book would go on to be made into a massively successful film, starring Audrey Hepburn. The manuscript reveals that the iconic Holly Golightly almost never was. Capote had originally named the lead character Connie Gustafson.

breakfast2The original ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ final working draft manuscript for its 1958 Random House publication consists of its entire 84 pages, mainly on high-quality goldenrod yellow paper, and copiously annotated throughout by author Truman Capote. Completing the package are the original, hand stenciled title page design, “About the Author” page, colophon, dedication, “other works by,” content, and half-title pages—topped off by the original Random House mailing label addressed to Capote’s Brooklyn residence.

There are notations by the author on every single page, with most pages containing at least a dozen, and many pages having closer to 30 corrections.
