The India Pale Ale (IPA) is one of the most popular beer styles on the market today. The IPA has a strong hoppy flavor that beer drinkers can’t seem to get enough of.

The IPA was first brewed in England in the late 1700s. English brewers added more hops, which is a natural preservative, to their beer so it would withstand the long voyage from England to India (where it was enjoyed by British troops stationed in the region).

Today’s market is inundated with India Pale Ales. To pick ‘best’ IPAs is almost impossible with so many to choose from. So, here’s a list of some of our favorites that you can enjoy.

jaipurIPAJaipur IPA – Thornbridge Brewery, Derbyshire, United Kingdom
A high citrus IPA that is lighter than many British IPAs. It has a nice, malty base and moderate carbonation.

Blackheart – Three Floyds Brewing Co. & Brewpub, Munster, Indiana
Three Floyds has made a unique IPA. This beer has a rich, creamy full body. There is a strong bready/malty taste to Blackheart. Not your typical IPA, but well worth giving a try.

Lost Sailor India Pale Ale – Berkshire Brewing Company Inc., South Deerfield, Massachusetts
A well-balanced IPA with just the right blend of hops, malt, citrus and carbonation. A great IPA for the uninitiated.

Strong hops and a bitter flavor makes Big Eye IPA a departure from the fruity IPAs on the market. It has a slight caramel flavor, and isn’t too sweet.

Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA – Great Lakes Brewing Company, Cleveland, Ohio
Another nice beer from Great Lakes Brewing. A creamy head with nice citrusy flavor. The hops flavor is not overwhelming. Easy to drink.
