A Top Ten Guide to Bermuda à la Bergdorf Goodman

Pursuitist Luxury Best Luxury Blog

With its mix of British charm and Island soul, Bermuda is a 22 mile-long island with something for everyone.  From those famous pink sand beaches to historic towns, landmarks, shopping, and plenty of wildlife adventure, this exceptional destination is only a 90 minute direct flight from NYC.

And New Yorkers will certainly be lost in their own Bermuda Triangle dreaming this month as the iconic department store Bergdorf Goodman has chosen the location for an extensive photo spread feature in its new Spring Collections 2017 magazine.

Stylist and native local Shioni Turini takes photographers — and readers — on a tour of her favorite places in Adventures in Bermuda.  And we agree!

Here’s a list of the top ten places the shopping publication chose as a background… and Pursuitist says you must not miss:

The Town of St. George’s: Designated a UNESCO world heritage site, this is where the founder of Bermuda Sir George Somers and his men landed in 1609 after their ship Sea Venture was wrecked at a nearby reef.  You’ll be captivated by the cobblestone streets and quaint lanes, but don’t miss a few other highlights of this area, like St. Peter’s church, completed in 1612.

Crystal Caves: To see the most breathtaking view on the island, you actually need to go underground to “Bermuda’s True Hidden Treasures.”  Near St. George’s, these caves boast incredible deep, clear subterranean lakes and remarkable formations.

The Perfumery: Here you can find the essence of Bermuda in a bottle.  Lili Bermuda has offered exclusive fragrances made from the island’s flowers since 1928, all made on-site and unable to be found anywhere else. Not only can you tour to see how perfumes are made, but you can also create your own scent that’s just right for you.

Bermuda Botanical Gardens:  Free to enjoy, this mix of park, woodland, greenhouses, agricultural buildings and horticultural collections is chiefly of interest for its trees, orchard, and collection of orchids and Camden.

Hamilton: This capital of Bermuda is also the island’s beating heart, where you can enjoy sunset sailing and a stylish harbor, museums, shops, and galleries with an energetic, cosmopolitan vibe.  Here, you can do almost anything — sit in on a session of Parliament, take in the arts at the Bermuda National Gallery, or take in a lively nighttime bar scene.

Royal Naval Dockyard: One of the island’s most visited attractions, the Dockyard and National Museum provide a fascinating journey through Bermuda’s often-turbulent history, from shipwrecks and whaling to the first flying boats and modern tourism. Naval and maritime artifacts can be seen, as well as the opportunity to find local souvenirs.

Horseshoe Bay: Perhaps the most famous beach in Bermuda — and consistently ranked among the world’s top beaches — Horseshoe Bay gets its name from its shape, a curved stretch of sand against a backdrop of the blue waters of the Atlantic.  It is beautifully pink and sandy, and also great for snorkeling.

Unfinished Church: No, it’s not a ruin.  It was just never completed. And we love it even better for it! Perfect as an event backdrop, or for impromptu photo shoots of your own, Unfinished Church is an elegant edifice of picturesque Gothic ruins that date from 1874.

Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse: One of the oldest — if not the oldest — cast-iron lighthouse in the world, this landmark provides excellent panoramic views if you climb its 185 steps to the top.  And if you choose to stay at the base of the tower, you can still delight in the Lighthouse Tea Room, a restaurant converted from the lighthouse keeper’s former living quarters, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily.

Tobacco Bay Beach: Perhaps it’s the unusual limestone formations just off the shoreline that make this beach a top ranked attraction, but we bet it’s also because this is one of Bermuda’s only public beaches that allows concessions stands and restaurants that serve alcohol.  So it’s the spot to relax and enjoy both sights and sips in the sand.

If the Spring Collections 2017 28 page spread — and several of the landmark department store’s prominent window displays — are any indication, Bermuda is one of the most beautiful and stylish escapes available.  And so close to NYC!  When even Bergdorf Goodman is on board, you know you need to #GoToBermuda.
