Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere Wins Venice Film Festival

Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” about a Hollywood star who becomes numb to life through drink, drugs and a string of casual relationships, won the Golden Lion for best picture at the Venice film festival on Saturday. The choice of the U.S. director’s movie will come as a surprise on the Lido waterfront, where reaction to the Los Angeles-based drama was mixed.

Her new film is an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles; Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a bad-boy actor stumbling through a life of excess at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood.
